Ways to Decorate Your Window for the Holiday Season

Decorating the inside of your house for the holiday season is a lot of fun. But while you’re at it, why not add some decoration to your windows? Here’s a few gift ideas for dressing up the outside of your home to match what’s going on inside. (Also see Decorate Your Door for the Holidays.)

During the Roman Empire, leaves and greenery were used by politicians and soldiers as crowns and trophies. It’s believed that during this time the greenery was then used as a sign of victory and people began putting it on their doors.

These days, during our holiday season, all types of wreaths are available. You can have different designs and colors, as well as wreaths with lights. Shown here are just some of the options you have for an outdoor hanging wreath.

Many people put wreaths on their doors, but you can also hang a wreath on your window using a magnetic or suction cup wreath holder. (Shown below.) This allows you to easily remove the wreath after the Christmas season without doing any damage to your windows.

Lighted Window Decorations

Putting lights in your window is another way to brighten up the holiday season. Lighted decorations are available in many different shapes. For example, there are candlesticks, Santas, and snowflakes.

These usually attached your window with a suction cup so they can be removed or changed after the season. For safety sake, check to be sure these are UL listed for indoor or outdoor use.

Lighted window decorations give people inside your home a colorful window to view while letting those who pass by the outside of the house also enjoy the window embellishment.

Window Stickers

Stickers are fun to use all year round. But for the holiday season you can use these removable stickers to decorate your windows. They’re easy to peel off and position anywhere on your windows. When the holiday season is over, you can easily remove them.

The stickers are also can also be used on your walls and doors.

Holiday window stickers will let your kids have fun decorating your windows for the season without a lot of mess and bother.

Stained Glass Applique and Window Film

Another way to dress up your window is to add a stained glass appliqué or an adhesive window film. These can be year-round decorations, not just for the holiday season.

You put either of these types of decoration on by peeling the backing and sticking it on the window. Then, later, you can simply peel it off.

Window films and appliques are available in a stained glass design so you can have a festive bit of color covering your window for the holiday season.

Window Boxes

Many people are lucky enough to have window boxes in front of their windows. Why not include the window box in your holiday decoration plans? The trick is to fill them with visually interesting seasonal items.

For example, small topiaries or trees, along with the occasional pine cone can be used. Plastic or lighted ornaments can also fill in the box as long as they don’t need to be plugged in. Another idea is to stack neat piles of glass ornaments in the window box.

Mix and match different seasonal items to dress up your window box and add to the holiday sparkle of your house.
