Using Window Blinds for Window Treatments

Window blinds, when used as a window treatment, have various purposes including keeping the sun out of your house, giving you a sense of privacy, and decorating the interior of your home, among others. When used as decoration, window blinds can be the center of attention or can be used to compliment the overall look and feel of the home. The three most common types of blinds are Venetian, or horizontal blinds, mini-blinds, and vertical blinds.

Venetian or horizontal blinds are a complete window covering that can be opened or closed or raised and lowered using a wand, cord, or metal chain attached to the blinds on one side of the window. The blinds hang down from the top of the window and use horizontal slats that are lying within an assembly that resembles a ladder.

The slats can be tilted in unison using the wand or cord. When the slats are tilted to overlap completely, outside light is blocked. When the blind slats are lying flat, the most light is let in. Or you can tilt the slats to let in various degrees of light. Using the cord or chain, you can also raise the blinds completely to show the window and let in light, or lower them completely and close the slats which both blocks the light and provides privacy.

Venetian blinds are available in various materials including wood, vinyl, aluminum, and bamboo. This means you will have many customizable colors and textures when using Venetian blinds to accentuate the décor of a room.

Mini Blinds are a window covering that act as Venetian blinds do, lying horizontally to cover the window. These blinds also use a cord, chain or wand to pull them open and closed. However, the difference between the Venetian and mini blinds is their size.

While Venetian blinds reach the floor and are ideal for covering larger windows and sliding glass doors, the mini blinds are perfect for smaller windows that reach only part of the way down the wall. Miniblinds typically come with slats that are smaller than those used in Venetian blinds, the most common being a one inch width or less. This lets them provide a tight, crisp look that meshes well with contemporary décor. Mini blinds are also available in various materials, although vinyl is the most common. Because of their smaller size, mini blinds are often used in addition to other window treatments.

Vertical Blinds use slats that hang vertically so they touch the floor.

The slats can be of any size, although three or four inches is the typical width. Unlike Venetian blinds where the slats rest on top of each other, the slats in vertical blinds lay side by side. When you pull the wand, cord, or chain, the slats can be opened to let in more light or closed to block light. Additionally, the blinds can be opened or closed from the middle or from the sides. When moved completely to one side of the window the maximum amount of light will get through the window.

The height of the vertical blinds can be varied depending on the height of the window they are covering. In many cases, vertical blinds are used to cover a sliding glass door, which generally stands as tall as the ceiling does. They are also perfect for covering large picture windows, French doors, and patio doors. Thick, clear plastic vertical blinds are also used commercially, typically in cold storage rooms in the food industry.

Vertical blinds are often made of vinyl, but you can find them in other materials including wood and aluminum, and even fabric. Their long, drape-like slats and clean lines make them a fashionable choice for contemporary homes.

Blinds of all shapes, sizes and materials are found in homes everywhere. While one version may be more popular than another, blinds of any kind can give the home a tailored appearance in addition to making a new home feel more lived in. Window blinds are all easily customizable, so choosing the right one for your window treatment is easy.
